Nurnberg, who has already published a study in the Journal of the American Medical Association about the efficacy of Viagra in men who have sexual dysfunction associated with treatment for depression, says that 84% of women in his study had a return of sexual enjoyment after treatment with Viagra.

The study enrolled 42 women who had no history of sexual dysfunction before treatment for depression. All of the women were treated with one of the SSRI type of antidepressants such as Prozac or Zoloft, which often have sexual dysfunction as a side effect. All the women were “no longer depressed after being treated with those drugs for six to eight weeks,” he says. But all the women “reported sexual dysfunction related to the SSRI treatment.”

The women are randomly selected to take either Viagra or dummy pills for eight weeks. Neither the women nor the doctors knew which pills the women were getting.

Nurnberg and his colleagues assessed response using a standard psychiatric test designed to measure sexual function. The test, called the Clinical Global Drug for treatment of erectile dysfunction
Function or CGI-SF, scores responses about arousal or sexual satisfaction, using a 1 to 7 rating system, with lower scores indicating better functioning.

At the end of the study, “84% of women had a score of 2 or less,” he says. Moreover, he says that Viagra can be given at the same time as the antidepressant, which might make women “less likely to discontinue antidepressant treatment, which is a real problem since only about 20% of women are willing to stick with a full course of antidepressant therapy.” He says that often this reluctance to stay the course with treatment is related to the sexual dysfunction side effect.

Gerald F. Joseph Jr., MD, medical director of women’s services at St. John’s Health System in Springfield, Mo., tells WebMD that Nurnberg’s results are interesting but he is not entirely sold on Viagra. He says, for example, that “placebo effect is very powerful in studies of sexual dysfunction, and I’m not sure these findings are not really just a placebo effect.”

Joseph, who wasn’t involved in the study, says that as a surgeon he thinks the only way that Viagra could work in women is if the women have sexual dysfunction that is “associated with an abnormality in the erectile tissue present in the genitals. Otherwise, it just doesn’t make sense.”

Jan. 7, 2004 — Viagra can do wonders for men. But a new study shows it also improves sex for some postmenopausal women.

The placebo-controlled study, funded by Viagra maker Pfizer Inc., evaluated 202 postmenopausal women diagnosed with female sexual arousal disorder (FSAD). Half the women were treated with Viagra; the other half got inactive placebo pills. Many of the women who got the placebo reported improved genital sensation. Some even reported more sexual satisfaction. But both of these erectile pills were much more common among women who took Viagra.

“Unresolved emotional or relational issues should be addressed before beginning medical therapies,” Berman and colleagues stress. Their report appears in the December 2003 issue of The Journal of Urology.

Women were included in the study if they were postmenopausal or if they had a hysterectomy. Their ages ranged from 30 to 71 with an average age of about 51.

The Berman team focused on the women’s answers to two questions after taking Viagra or placebo:

After taking the study medication, the sensation/feeling in my genital (vagina, labia, clitoris) area during intercourse or stimulation seemed to be: (a) more than before, (b) less than before, or (c) unchanged.
After taking the study medication, intercourse and/or foreplay was (a) pleasant and satisfying; better than before taking the study medication; (b) unpleasant; worse than before the study medication; (c) unchanged; no difference; or (d) pleasant but still not like it used to be or I would like it to be.

Among placebo recipients, 44% reported improvement in the first question and 28% reported improvement in the second question.

Among all Viagra recipients, 57% reported improvement in the first question and 42% reported improvement in the second question.

But among Viagra recipients with sexual arousal disorder who did not have HSDD, the results were more striking: 69% reported improvement in the first question. This group was eight times more likely to report improvement than women without HSDD who got placebo.

Similarly, among Viagra recipients with sexual arousal disorder who did not have HSDD 50% reported improvement in the second question. This group was 11 times more likely to report improvement than non-HSDD women who got placebo.

The authors note that women who respond to Viagra may need to have normal levels of estrogen and testosterone. For many postmenopausal women, that may mean menopausal erectile pill
therapy. In the present study, the women had normal hormone levels or were receiving menopausal replacement therapy.

Pfizer: Viagra Does Not Raise Blindness Risk

June 28, 2005 — Pfizer officials say they have found no sign of increased
blindness risk in men taking its drug Viagra.

Pfizer staff have reviewed all reports of eye-related events since the drug
has been on the market, according to a news release from the liquid tadalafil

“There is no evidence that Viagra causes blindness or any other serious
ocular condition,” says Joseph Feczko, MD, in the news release. Feczko is
Pfizer’s chief medical officer.

Rare Vision Problem

“Men taking Viagra are at no greater risk for blindness than men of
similar age and health not taking the medicine,” says Feczko.

That includes a rare vision problem called nonarteritic anterior ischemic
optic neuropathy (NAION), says Feczko. NAION is a painless swelling of the
optic nerve that causes a rapid reduction in vision.

A journal report earlier this year noted
NAION in 14 Viagra users. Most had other health problems or
structural eye problems that raised their risk of NAION. None of the men in the
study went blind, although their vision loss was permanent and reportedly
started within 24-36 hours of taking Viagra.

Pfizer: No Evidence Seen in More Than 27 Million Users

“After more than 10 years of rigorous clinical study and worldwide
safety monitoring of a medicine used by more than 27 million men, there is no
evidence to suggest a link between Viagra and blindness or other serious ocular
events,” says Feczko.

“In addition, several studies specifically looking into the effect of
Viagra in the eye by Pfizer as well as independent ophthalmologic experts found
Viagra to have no serious adverse effects on the eye,” he says.

Pfizer, FDA Discussing Label Changes

According to Pfizer’s statement,
the company is still talking to the FDA about changing Viagra’s label to
reflect rare vision problems in men who have used the drug.

The update would reflect rare reports of NAION in some men who have used the
drug.

However, the FDA concluded that no causal relationship between Viagra and

June 19, 2000 — A dollar spent on Viagra is spent just as efficiently as a
dollar spent on kidney dialysis, a new study shows. Experts agree that the math
is right, but whether it justifies insurance coverage for the male potency drug
is a bone of contention.

“There is a significant loss of quality of life that comes from erectile
dysfunction,” the lead researcher of the study, Kenneth J. Smith, MD, tells
WebMD. “One thing that motivated me to look at this is that I am a primary
care doctor. I am seeing men with erectile dysfunction having to fill out
insurance forms to justify Viagra treatment. What prompted the insurance
carriers to set up so many barriers for some men to get Viagra who would
clearly benefit from it? I see Viagra use more as a health issue and a
dysfunction pills
issue than as a lifestyle issue.”

Smith, who is associate director of the internal medicine residency program
at Mercy Hospital of Pittsburgh, based his calculations on several key

, such as the average age of the Viagra user and the average number
of times he would use it per month.

Researchers also took into account that this medication would not work for
some men and that some men would have side effects. In every case, they chose
figures that would make it harder to show a cost benefit for the drug. Even so,

“We used in our baseline analysis a cost of $52 1998 dollars for six
pills per month,” Smith says. “You would need to spend $244 per month

cholesterol-lowering medication, or heart bypass grafting, Smith says. He
admits, however, that unlike these other conditions, erectile dysfunction is
hardly life threatening. But he argues that insurance carriers pay for many
other illnesses — such as migraine headaches — that affect the quality but
not the length of a person’s life.

“It looks like when insurance companies were deciding whether to cover
Viagra, they probably didn’t use a cost-effectiveness analysis to make the
decision,” he says. “It would appear that their decisions have been
arbitrary.”

In an editorial, Michael R. McGarvey, MD, says Smith and colleagues did
their math the right way. But McGarvey, who is chief medical officer for
Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey, says they drew the wrong

“My personal feeling is that we really need to re-examine the whole
issue of what we should be expecting health insurance to do for us,”

lives.”

McGarvey says that Americans expect their health insurance to provide more
benefits than ever before. These expectations are partly due to new

Americans are reasonably confused about the coverage they have and don’t

McGarvey points out that there is a limit to what insurers can do. At
current rates, one in five Americans will be uninsured by the year 2008. The
question the nation must face, he says, is whether less extensive health
insurance should be given to more people, or more extensive health insurance
should be given to fewer people.

“We are confronting a national embarrassment which is the number of
people that are uninsured,” McGarvey says. “We know health insurance is
an important but increasingly expensive component of our lives. We need to
think about it and exercise some judgement in making and adhering to some
difficult decisions. As you add more and more and more benefits, insurance will
become less and less affordable and people will drop out of the insurance pool.
And that is bad for a growing number of people.”

Smith agrees that McGarvey is raising important questions. “The points
that Dr. McGarvey makes are very good ones — and we are looking at two sides
of the same coin,” he says. “I don’t think that you can base insurance
coverage just on cost-effectiveness. There are other factors. But it should
certainly be a factor.”

Aug. 20, 2003 — Levitra has just won FDA approval — a move toward challenging the groundbreaking erectile dysfunction drug Viagra. But what does Levitra have to offer that the little blue pill doesn’t?

The news will hopefully bring more men to their doctors, opening up more soft tab viagra
about this still-secret subject, says Natan Bar-Chama, MD, urologist and director of male reproductive surgery at Mt. Sinai Medical Center in New York City.

“We’ll hopefully encourage more patients, and also physicians, to be more proactive in addressing this problem,” he tells WebMD. Bar-Chama, who was not associated with the studies, agreed to comment on the announcement.

The Drugs

Viagra, the first pill for erectile dysfunction, was developed by Pfizer, Inc. and put on the market in 1998.

Levitra, co-developed by Bayer Pharmaceuticals and GlaxoSmithKline, takes effect a bit quicker than Viagra — in less than 20 minutes for some men. Also, it keeps acting for about five hours, compared with Viagra’s four hours, the company says. GlaxoSmithKline is a WebMD sponsor. Bayer and Glaxo say Levitra will be available in September.

Cialis, another erectile dysfunction drug in the pipeline, is expected to get FDA approval later this year. Cialis takes effect quickly (in 30 minutes or less), and its effects last about 36 hours. Also, its effectiveness is not affected by food, which has been a problem with Viagra, says Cialis maker Eli Lilly and Company, a WebMD sponsor.

The Mechanics

Levitra has been studied in more than 50 clinical trials involving 5,700 men. In Europe, it has been available since March 2003, and has shown to be effective and safe in treating erectile dysfunction.

Like Viagra, Levitra acts by relaxing muscles and blood vessels in the penis, allowing increased blood flow into the penis, which produces an erection.

With Levitra, onset of action occurs within 16 minutes for some men, between 30 to 60 minutes for others. Viagra starts acting 45 to 90 minutes after taking the pill. “On a practical level, it doesn’t make a big difference. Both time-frames are adequate to engage in generic erectile dysfunction drugs
relations,” says Bar-Chama.

Also, Levitra works well when taken either before or after a low-fat meal, Bar-Chama tells WebMD, but a high-fat meal will decrease its aborption, making it less effective. High-fat meals also hinder Viagra.

For alternative treatment for erectile dysfunction men who have diabetes and or have had prostate surgery, both Levitra and Viagra work equally well in solving erectile dysfunction, he adds. However, like Viagra, Levitra is not advised for men taking nitrate drugs (such as woman use viagra
tablets or patches) or alpha-blockers (drugs used to treat benign prostate hyperplasia and/or high blood pressure).

Cialis takes effect in 16 to 30 minutes, and stays active in the body for about 36 hours. Also, absorption of Cialis is not affected by either high-fat or low-fat meals, according to Carole Copeland, a Lilly sildenafil citrate india.

Wide-Scale Problem

More than 50% of men over age 40 will experience erectile dysfunction at some time,” says Bar-Chama.

“And yet, nine out of 10 are currently not being treated. New Drug Helps Those Let Down by Viagra

Oct. 10, 2003 — Move over Viagra. Men now have a choice when it comes to drug treatments for erectile dysfunction, and it seems that the newest therapy may be the best option for some.

The newly approved drug Levitra was found to work in many men who did not respond to Viagra in a study funded by Levitra manufacturers Bayer AG and GlaxoSmithKline, a WebMD sponsor.

The men included in the new study were erectile dysfunction help

after failing to achieve successful erections while taking Viagra during at least four of their six most recent sexual attempts. Participants were randomized to receive either Levitra or placebo. After 12 weeks, men were three times more likely to complete sexual intercourse successfully on Levitra than on placebo. While more than 40% of men who took Levitra achieved an erection only 16% of men who took a placebo were able to do so.

The findings are the first to show that Levitra can help men with erectile dysfunction who are not helped by Viagra, says researcher Culley C. Carson, III, MD. Carson is scheduled present the finding Saturday in Denver at a meeting of the Sexual Medicine Society of North America.

More Potent Than Viagra?

Levitra hit the market with a vengeance in August, acquiring close to 50% of the market share for newly treated patients within less than a month. Viagra sample
studies suggest that the new drug may be more potent than the older Viagra and may also have a better side effect profile, but no cheapest citrate sildenafil clinical studies have been done to prove this.

“If you’re asking me which drug is better, there is no way I can answer,” says urologist Irwin Goldstein, MD, who is one of the nation’s leading impotence researchers.

Goldstein was not involved with the latest study, but had conducted research on Viagra, Levitra, and another erectile dysfunction drug that is expected to win FDA approval later this year, Eli Lilly’s Cialis.

He tells WebMD that while there is, as yet, no clearly superior drug among the three, patients will benefit from having more than one drug to choose from.

“As a clinician I really appreciate the fact that men now have choices,” he says. “Viagra has helped a lot of people. But just as there are plenty of men who have done well on it, there are plenty of others who have not responded.”

Good Sex

“One message here is that men who have failed Viagra should certainly try this drug,” urologist and study co-author Myron Murdoch, MD, tells WebMD. “But another message is that even men who are taking Viagra may see a benefit. They may think they are getting an optimal sexual response but they really don’t know, because they haven’t had anything to compare it with.”

Meanwhile experts say it is also important for men with erectile dysfunction — often an embarrassing problem — to speak up.

“Now more than ever it is important for men with sexual problems to talk about them with their doctors,” he says. “We now have a choice in the tools we can use to help patients. There is no reason to suffer in silence.”

New Viagra Study Eases Some Fears

May 31, 2000 — A new study shows that Viagra appears to be safe even for
some men with severe heart disease, as long as they are not taking
nitroglycerine or similar drugs for their conditions.

Reports of heart attacks in several men who had used Viagra had led
researchers to worry that the drug might pose a special risk to those with
heart problems such as angina (chest pain). But the study, published in
TheNew England Journal of Medicine, shows that the usual dose of
Viagra causes no damaging changes to the heart’s circulation in men with
coronary artery disease (CAD).

Lead author Howard C. Herrmann, MD, tells WebMD that his findings
“should provide reassurance about the safety of Viagra for patients who
take it, for urologists who prescribe it to treat erectile dysfunction, and for
generic viagra overnight delivery
, who probably don’t ask about erectile dysfunction as often as
they should.” Herrmann is professor of medicine and director of
interventional cardiology at the University of Sildenafil citrate india Medical Center in
Philadelphia.

Herrmann and colleagues measured Viagra’s effect on blood flow to the heart
and lungs in 14 men with severe coronary artery disease. CAD is a major cause
of angina and heart attacks. For the study, men had to stop taking
nitrate-containing drugs such as nitroglycerin, which is often used to treat
angina.

All of the men in the study had CAD so severe that at least one of the major
arteries supplying the heart with blood had closed up by 70 percent or more.
The study was supported by Pfizer, the maker of Viagra.

Herrmann reports that careful examination of the blood flow within the
arteries showed that Viagra had essentially no effect on blood flow to the
heart or lungs, or on the heart’s ability to pump blood.

“Our data support the consensus position of the American College of
Cardiology and the American Heart Association that Viagra is safe for patients
with stable coronary artery disease who are not taking medications containing
nitrates,” Herrmann writes.

Rohit R. Arora, MD, who reported one of the first cases of heart attack in a
patient who had taken Viagra, tells WebMD that this “well-done, meticulous,
and focused” study provides useful information about Viagra’s effects on
the heart’s circulatory system, but he would like to see more direct
information about heart attacks in men taking the drug. Ahora, who is director
of critical cardiac care services at Generic viagra overnight shipping

Herrmann says the safety of Viagra has not been studied in patients who have
unstable angina, who have had a recent heart attack, or who have severe high or
low blood pressure.

People who have not previously had even moderate exercise (including sexual

be cautious when beginning Viagra, Herrmann says. He recommends that those who
have not been exercising regularly have a stress test, since sexual activity

Viagra: How Young Is Too Young?

Rafael Palmeiro seems an unlikely Viagra pitchman. The Texas
Rangers slugger is only 37 and won’t admit to having erection problems, yet he
recently agreed to appear in ads promoting the drug. The deal has made people
wonder whether Palmeiro really represents men with erectile dysfunction, or
whether Pfizer, the company that makes Viagra, wants to persuade young men to
try it for fun.

It’s true that erectile dysfunction is more common in older
men, but many potential Viagra users are hardly senior citizens: About 40% of
40-year-old men in the U.S. have some degree of erectile dysfunction. Most
Viagra users today, according to Pfizer, are in their early to mid 50s. So it
makes sense that the company would want to reach more men around Palmeiro’s
age.

Urologist Myron Murdock, medical director of the Impotence
Institute of America, says these men are likely to use Viagra because sexual
performance is a high priority for them.

A younger man, Murdock says, “wants his V-12 Jaguar working
just perfectly,” whereas an elderly gent may be content with less
dependable erections. What’s more, the sexual partners of younger men “are
more demanding of their performance,” Murdock says.

Pfizer denies that it’s promoting Viagra for recreational use.
“We’ve drug dysfunction erectile
opposed that,” says spokesman Geoff Cook.
Nevertheless, Murdock says it’s fine to pop the little blue pill to

We assume all young men have normal sexual functioning,
“but they’re really not normal,” Murdock says. Hardening of the
arteries, which restricts blood flow to the penis, can begin during the teen
years, so that by the time a man is in his 20s, his ability to get and keep an
erection has already begun to decline. Murdock says many men who seek Viagra
for recreational use actually have minor erectile dysfunction.

There’s also some evidence that Viagra can shorten the time it
takes a man to recover after sex and be ready for another round. This is called
the “refractory period.” Normally it lasts 20 minutes or longer. One
study, published in the journal Human Reproduction in January 2000,
found that Viagra shortened the refractory period by about 10 minutes in
healthy men.

What Viagra cannot do is increase your sexual appetite or make
you ejaculate if you have problems reaching orgasm. Ira Sharlip, urologist in
San Francisco, says you shouldn’t expect your erections to reach staggering new
proportions, either. “I don’t believe that Viagra can increase an erection
beyond 100% of normal,” he says.

“Viagra is a super-safe drug,” Murdock says, assuming
you have a healthy heart and don’t take nitrates.

Nitrates include nitroglycerin — a drug that many men take for
chest pain from heart disease — and “poppers.” Poppers are little
vials of amyl or butyl nitrate. Breaking the vial releases nitrate vapor, which
gives a brief high when inhaled. It’s most often used to enhance sexual
pleasure, and mostly by gay men. Poppers are not all that safe to use on their
own, and they’re especially dangerous when you’re on Viagra.

Nitrates widen blood vessels, and Viagra increases that effect.
Mixing the two can cause your blood pressure to drop drastically. A sudden drop
in blood pressure can make you pass out, and you may die if your blood pressure
stays too low for too long.

Preservatives like sodium nitrate — found in processed food –
do not cause this problem, so you won’t die from eating a hot dog while on
Viagra. Even so, it’s best to take it on an empty stomach. That way, the drug
absorbs into your bloodstream faster. Wine may contain nitrates, but not the
kind that cause problems with Viagra. It’s fine to play some Marvin Gaye on the
stereo and sip a glass of Chardonnay, if that’s what puts you in the mood.

Although you may be tempted to order Viagra discreetly from one
of the hundreds of Web sites that sell it, don’t. “It’s bad medicine,”
Murdock says. You really must bring your doctor into your sex life if you want
to use Viagra.

When you buy from an online pharmacy, you just have to answer
some health questions before you proceed to the checkout page. If you answer
honestly — and that might be a big “if” for those determined to get

the pharmacists who fill your order don’t know your medical history, and no
questionnaire can diagnose the root cause of your problem. Erectile dysfunction
can have serious underlying causes, like diabetes, heart disease, liver

goal with any of our marketing is simply to reach men and encourage them to see
a doctor,” he says.

It seems that Viagra can make sex better for women, too. Like
the penis, the clitoris is erectile tissue — spongy tissue that becomes
engorged with blood during sexual excitement. By increasing blood flow to the
clitoris, Viagra may heighten a woman’s sensation and arousal. It also seems to
increase vaginal lubrication.

Murdock says many couples like to heat things up by splitting a
dose of Viagra. “It’s an interesting sexual situation,” he says. The

The FDA has not approved Viagra for women, but Murdock says,

advertise any use that isn’t FDA-approved.

The studies being done to test Viagra’s safety and
effectiveness in women have shown good results so far. “We’re cautiously
optimistic,” Cook says.

March 9, 2004 — Men with mild to moderate forms of heart
failure may be able to safely use the drug Viagra to treat erectile
dysfunction, a new study shows.

Researchers found selected men with heart failure were able to
use the drug without dangerous side effects if they were not taking nitrates
(drugs commonly used to treat heart failure) and had no evidence of a lack of
blood flow and oxygen to the heart muscle — commonly caused by narrowed heart
arteries.

Previous reports have shown that Viagra could trigger
potentially dangerous drops in blood pressure in these men. But this study
showed that although the drug caused a slight reduction in blood pressure in
this group of 35 men, no one experienced a dangerous drop in blood pressure or
other significant side effects while taking Viagra.

However, Viagra can cause significant decreases in blood
pressure in people taking nitrates and should not be taken by this group.

According to researchers, erectile dysfunction affects more
than half of all men aged 40 to 70 and is common among men with heart failure,
both are conditions that are linked to vascular problems. Heart failure is a
condition in which the heart is unable to pump enough blood to meet the body’s
needs.

Despite the fact that ED is common among men with heart
failure, researchers say the ed pills

Study Clears Some Viagra Fears

Researchers say initial reports of deaths associated with
Viagra use soon after the drug was released have caused physicians to hesitate
before prescribing the drug to patients with significant heart disease.

heart-related deaths, say researcher Linda J. Webster, MScN, of the Trattamento cronico tadalafil

In this study, researchers looked at the effects of treating ED
with Viagra in a carefully selected group of 35 men with mild to moderate heart
failure who did not use nitates. The men were randomly divided into two groups:
one took Viagra for six weeks and then switched to a placebo for six weeks, and
the other took a placebo for six weeks and then took Viagra for another six
weeks.

The results appear in the March 8 issue of the Archives of
Internal Medicine.

The study showed that Viagra caused an average drop in blood
pressure of about 6 mm Hg — an insignificant drop that did not lead to
symptoms.

Researchers found Viagra improved ED and quality of life among
